Workers Leaving the Factory
Harun Farocki, GER 1995, 36 min., color and b/w, German

The first camera in the history of film focused its lens on a factory. Yet, one hundred years later, it can be said that factories have hardly attracted film; rather, they have repelled it. Films about work or the working class have not become a major genre, and the factory square has remained a sideshow. The factory gate deploys workers who have been temporalized by work regulations, and compression creates the image of the working class. (Harun Farocki)

Film Reel Labor in a Single Shot
On view are the results of a film workshop from 2014, in which filmmakers from 15 cities – from Hangzhou to Łódź to Mexico City – participated. The films, produced in collaboration with Harun Farocki and Antje Ehmann, followed strict guidelines: they could be no longer than two minutes, they could not contain a single cut, and they had to deal with work as the main subject. The pictograms of Alice Creischer and Andreas Siekmann inform about the production locations. (HKW Berlin)
Followed by a curatorial talk with Antje Ehmann (curator and filmmaker).

Auf amol a Streik
Ruth Beckermann, Josef Aichholzer, AUT 1978, 24 min., German

Semperit Traiskirchen, May 17 to May 11, 1978: A more-than-three-week strike has taken place in an Austrian tire factory for the first time since the end of the war. With interviews, photographs, graphics, and a discussion with strikers, the film shows how the strike unfolded. It gives insight into the union’s bearing – its proximity to employees and its obligations to employers.

Unter dem Pflaster, der Strand (Sous les pavés, la plage/Under the Pavement, the Beach)
Sasha Pirker, AUT 2011, 5 min., without dialogue

With her film, Sasha Pirker tells a short story about the Belvedere 21 (formerly known as the “21er Haus”). A moment is captured on film, and fragments of materiality become visible in a single shot. The moment gradually becomes clear, and is inscribed in the history of the house. It addresses the past and the future. The film celebrates this one moment – with light and sound. The light clears the way for possible associations and for the essence of film itself. (Sasha Pirker)

Rollerball
Norman Jewison, USA 1975, 125 min., English with German subt.
Director: Norman Jewison; camera: Douglas Slocombe; editor: Antony Gibbs; art director: Robert Laing
With James Caan, John Houseman, Maud Adams, John Beck, et al.

Rollerball takes place in a post-apocalyptic society that has eliminated poverty, epidemics, and racism. Megacorporations and their shareholders, who seemingly act only for the benefit of the community, manage the nation together with a supercomputer named Zero. To quench the hunger of the masses for real war, “rollerball” was invented, a mixture of roller skating and wrestling reminiscent of ancient gladiator fights.
The cult status the film has achieved in architectural circles results from the elaborate exterior shots: the general “power management” center is set in the actual BMW headquarters designed by Karl Schwanzer in Munich, while the old BMW Museum serves as the oval library building in the film.

Followed by a talk with Sasha Pirker and guest curator Lotte Schreiber.
