A nationalist, illiberal populism is rising throughout the continent. What is to be done for a free, open and just Europe? The conversation between Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Claus Leggewie is the opening event of Eurozine’s annual conference, the 29th European Meeting of Cultural Journals. The talk is part of the public program Joint Ventures at Belvedere 21.

Daniel Cohn-Bendit was co-president of the group European Greens–European Free Alliance in the European Parliament. He is a co-founder of the Spinelli Group, a European parliament intergroup aiming at relaunching the federalist project in Europe. Daniel Cohn-Bendit was a student leader during the May 1968 protests in France.
 
Claus Leggewie is a political scientist. Since 2015 he has been Ludwig Börne Professor at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen. His book Europe First: A Declaration of Independence came out in 2017. Claus Leggewie is a member of the Eurozine Advisory Board and co-publisher of Blätter für deutsche und internationale Politik.

“El Niño” is a young guy who lives in La Línea de la Concepción, close to Rock of Gibraltar, repairing and testing motorboats. After a night of party with his friend “El Compi”, they meet Halil, a young Muslim who has an uncle, Rachid, a drug dealer. Convinced by El Compi, El Niño accepts to be a drug mule, crossing from África to Spain in a motorboat. On the opposite side of the law there is Jesús, a veteran police officer who, helped by his partner Eva, is looking for “El Inglés”, an important drug dealer who operates around the Rock of Gibraltar.
